Nutrition in Animals - VII Science

  • Plants can prepare their own food through a process called photosynthesis. They use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own food.
  • Unlike plants, animals cannot make their own food. They get their food from plants in two ways:
    • Some animals eat plants as their food.
    • Other animals eat other animals that eat plants. This means they get their food by eating animals that have already eaten plants.
  • There are animals that eat both plants and other animals.
  • Just like plants and animals, humans and all other living organisms need food for various reasons:
    • Growth: Food helps us grow.
    • Repair: It helps in repairing our body when we get hurt.
    • Functioning: Food provides energy for our body to function properly.
  • Food is made up of many components. They are:
    1. Carbohydrates
    2. Proteins
    3. Fats
    4. Vitamins
    5. Minerals
    6. Water
  • Some components of food, like carbohydrates, are complex substances. Our body cannot use them as they are. So, they need to be broken down into simpler substances. This process of breaking down complex components of food into simpler substances is called digestion.

  1. Different Ways of Taking Food

    1. Bees and hummingbirds suck nectar from plants.
    2. Baby humans and many other animals drink their mother's milk.
    3. Snakes like the python swallow the animals they catch.
    4. Some water animals filter tiny bits of food from the water around them and eat those.
  2. Animal Food and Feeding Habits:

Animal Kind of Food Mode of Feeding
    Snail Plants Scraping
    Ant Other animals Chewing
Eagle Other animals Capturing and swallowing
    Huming-bird Nectar Sipping (siphoning)
    Lice Blood Sucking
    Mosquito Blood Siphoning
    Butterfly Nectar Sipping (sucking)
    Housefly Various Sponging
  3. How Starfish Eat

    • Starfish feed on animals that have hard shells made of calcium carbonate.
    • When a starfish finds its prey, it uses its unique abilities to pry open the shell.
    • Once the shell is open, the starfish does something amazing! It pushes its stomach out through its mouth and into the shell of the prey.
    • The starfish's stomach engulfs the soft animal inside the shell, allowing it to digest its meal.
    • After the meal is finished, the starfish pulls its stomach back into its body.
    • Inside the starfish's body, the food is slowly digested, providing it with the energy it needs to keep swimming and exploring the ocean.
  4. Digestion in Humans

    • We start by taking in food through our mouth.
    • Once food enters our mouth, digestion begins.
    • The food travels through a long pathway called the alimentary canal, which includes:
      1. Buccal Cavity: Where the food first enters.
      2. Foodpipe or Oesophagus: It's like a tube that carries food to the stomach.
      3. Stomach: Here, food gets churned and mixed with digestive juices.
      4. Small Intestine: Where most of the digestion and nutrient absorption happen.
      5. Large Intestine and Rectum: Where water is absorbed and waste is stored.
      6. Anus: Where waste, called feces, is expelled from the body.
    • All these parts together form the alimentary canal, or the digestive tract.
    • As food travels through these compartments, it gradually gets digested.
    • Special juices from glands like the salivary glands, liver, and pancreas help in digestion. They convert complex food substances into simpler ones.
    • The alimentary canal and the associated glands work together to form the digestive system.
